Oh Sheet… My Obsession with Korean Sheet Masks

I’m a sheet mask whore, like literally.  I buy tons of sheet masks and I use it every single night right before I hit the sack and in the morning after I take a shower.

So what’s a sheet mask and why is it good for your skin?

Sheet masks originated from South Korea and it’s made from cotton, hydrogel or even paper. It’s face-shaped with cut outs for the eyes, nose, and mouth that is soaked in concentrated serum. The essence/serum consists of ingredients such as plant extracts, minerals, and vitamins that help rehydrate, revitalize and brighten the skin.

It acts as a “barrier” that locks the ingredients so it doesn’t evaporate and the serum gets absorbed by the skin better.

How to use a sheet mask

After cleansing and applying toner on your face, put the sheet mask and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Chill and just wait for the magic to work.

Remove the sheet mask after the allotted amount of time and gently pat the leftover serum into your skin. Just leave it on and don’t rinse it off!

If there’s leftover serum in the sheet mask packet, you can use it to apply to your hands or neck.

What sheet mask is best for your skin?

There’s definitely a sheet mask out there for you depending on your skin type.

If you have troubled skin and prone to breakouts or acne, I would advise looking for a sheet mask that has a “calming” effect on the skin. Look for sheet masks which active ingredients are snail mucin, tea tree, and aloe.

These sheet masks are recommended for people with dry skin.

Sheet masks with lemon and rice extract help brighten the skin instantly.

Where to buy ’em

I’d usually order online from local K-beauty sellers and buy them in bulk packs ($10 to $15 a pack)  because it’s cheaper that way and in some cases, they’ll include free samples and ship it for free. You can also find a wide array of sheet masks at Sephora or Amazon.

Visit a mall near you and you’ll likely find road shop brands like Innisfree, The FaceShop, and Etude House.

Sheet Mask Tips

Face Massage on Facebook MessengerMake sure to clean your first face and that you do your usual skin care routine before putting one on.

Face Massage on Facebook MessengerStore sheet masks in the fridge. After a long day, the cold mask will feel super refreshing and also help minimize pores.

Face Massage on Facebook MessengerDon’t leave it on for too long. Recommended time is 15-20 minutes or take it off as soon as it starts to dry out.

Face Massage on Facebook MessengerUse it as a primer. I use one before putting on makeup as I’ve noticed that the makeup looks better and stays on longer.

  8. The Korean sheet masks I have used are so good to the skin. Even my boyfriend likes them. There’s a charcoal mask that makes our skin so soft and makes us feel rejuvenated whenever we use it. I usually buy at Althea Korea or Beauty MNL. Sometimes, I shop via physical stores like Watsons / Tony Moly. 🙂

  14. I love face mask too!!! I can’t even decide which one to get – whitening, hydrating, firming, brightening, moisturizing? I think I need them all. What do you think is the best one to get if I have a combination of dry and oily skin? And another question, I usually put my sleeping mask after the face mask, is that okay? Sorry, I have so many question haha

  15. I loooove Korean face masks too! I used to buy them in bulk and give them out as gifts. Unfortunately I became too lazy to take care of my skin and lately I have totally no skincare routine! Thanks for reminding me, have to get one now!

  16. I never realised you needed to clean your face first but it totally makes sense! I’m dying to try again now, the only times I’ve used a sheet mask I’ve not felt like they did much – now I know why! Lemon and rice for me, these kids keep in me up all night is making those bags daaaark!
